Raphael Franco is a Brazilian artist whose photography explores the relationship between human beings and the physical world. The construction industry at work in the cities of London and Sao Paulo is the main subject of his study. The concept of Urban Surgery comes from the observation of the processes, machinery and labour used in the physical transformation of cities. The city is perceived as a living organism, with a body being opened up and torn apart to create the built environment. The images reflect social dynamics, political and economic issues, our relationships with machines and the role they play.

Raphael studied at the Faculdade Santa Marcelina in Sao Paulo where he has also exhibited. His most recent residency was Furnish Me! in Casamarles, Spain. His work involves the production of images and actions that aim to communicate a feeling of liberty and raise awareness of the environment. He intends to encourage people to feel more connected to their city exploring its spaces and possibilities and adding a poetic vision to everyday life.
